LGBT+ FLAG
The LGBT+ flag
The rainbow flag is the flag
wich represents the LGBT+ movement. Its creation goes back to 1978, when the
artist Gilbert Baker, an openly gay man and a drag queen, designed the first
rainbow flag.
Baker saw the rainbow as a
natural flag from the sky, so he adopted eight colors for the stripes, each
color with its own meaning:
The first versions of the
rainbow flag were made on June 25, 1978, for the San Francisco Gay Freedom Day
parade. Baker and some volunteers had made them by hand, and now he wanted to
massively produce the flag for the consumption of all.
Pink and turquoise stripes
were removed, which resulted in the contemporary six-striped flag:
This is the most common
variant of the rainbow flag, with the red stripe on top, like a real rainbow. The
fact that there are a lot of diferent colors means that there is a lot of
diversity in the LGBT+ community.
However, it
wasn’t until 1994 that the rainbow flag became the official symbol for LGBT+
pride. Now the rainbow flag is an international symbol for LGBT+ pride all
around the world.
